Book 5 – ‘Legend’ choosing the location

The location choice for Legend – Book 5 in the Moreton Scientific Investigation Series is based on the idea of a man who’d seen something weird as a child and now as a wealthy adult, fifty years later, wants to validate that strange memory.
I thought of several different scenarios with an alien angle but kept coming back to the Loch Ness Monster, which has documented sightings dating back to 565AD. I could have made up an alien sighting in another location but Loch Ness, which I have visited back in the 80’s, kept tapping me on the shoulder. I remember driving along the road at the side of the Loch and trying to keep my eyes on the road. I believe that the A482 is one of the most dangerous roads in the country as you cannot help looking at the Loch, just in case the monster rears its ugly head!
The Loch Ness Monster has a lot of appeal to me as a writer of fiction, providing scope for an alien connection or alien influence that could be developed in the storyline, and put a new slant on the ancient mystery.
As I researched Loch Ness, the monster and the local landscape and geology it became obvious to me that the exact location for the focal point of the story on the 22.5 miles of Loch would be around the iconic Urquhart Castle, one of the most recognizable castles on the planet, being positioned right next to the Loch.
It was also desirable to keep the locations within the book to a minimum as the previous two books, Transformation and Excavation, have multiple global locations within the storyline. I felt it was time to make a change and have just two locations Moreton in Marsh (the teams headquarters) and Loch Ness, and keep the focus on the storyline unfettered by changes in location.
